A Compound with History
During the Spanish period, the location and construction of the acequia madre (the main irrigation ditch) was one of the first acts in the founding of towns in New Mexico.1 El Lado de Acequia, now a tiny U.S. Historic District, was a village created by the Spaniards to maintain and oversee the acequia in the heart of what is today the Old Town neighborhood.
